About Us

In the Beginning:

Grooms & Company Construction, Inc. is part of an ongoing construction legacy that has been operating out of Wapello County, Iowa for over one hundred years. In the late eighteen hundreds Harvey Grooms started building in Southern Iowa. Many of the buildings built by him, his brothers, his sons and grandsons are still standing today. Harvey worked until his death in 1947

After the end of World War II, the company was re-established as Grooms' Brothers Inc. in 1948. Four of Harvey’s sons, Paul, G.E. “Gene”, Harvey, Jr., and Warren, now owned and operated the company. These four men and their sons worked throughout Southeast Iowa and Northern Missouri for the next thirty years. To allow for continuing growth and an ongoing tradition in the construction business a new company was established in 1978.

The Growing Years:

This new company, Grooms & Company Construction, Inc., consisted of the four brothers and seven of their sons. Today, three of these eleven owners are still leading the company and the remaining three are great-grandsons of Harvey, Sr..  The new company has grown in both size and expertise, handling projects of a scope and complexity never dreamed of when Harvey began his modest business.

In 1986 Grooms & Co. expanded operations to Northeast Missouri by relocating one of our owners to Macon, Missouri to build a 60 unit Senior Apartment Complex through the adaptive reuse of an historic Military Academy.  This presence has continued for 26 years and resulted in providing many clients with well-built and cost effective buildings including a $5.5 million dollar gymnasium and arts & entertainment complex for the Moberly Area Community College which hosts an annual basketball game with our own IHCC Warriors.

Where we're going:

As we look to our future as builders in this area, we are certain that the legacy and tradition will continue. The qualities, skills, and values of Harvey Grooms have been passed down from generation to generation and are still evident today. The belief that providing a quality product for a fair price is as important today as it was for past generations of Grooms builders. We will strive to continue this legacy.

As Grooms moves forward into the next 100 years of service, we continue to provide a full range of building and planning services for all building types. From educational, hospitality, retail, commercial and industrial facilities, the experience we have accumulated throughout our history combined with the new technologies available today will provide our customers with the best possible solutions for all building needs.
